THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: SAL BALDENEGRO ON “LET WHOEVER IS WITHOUT SIN CAST THE FIRST STONE,” BURUNDANGA BORICUA REVIEWS EL JEFE, A NEW BOOK ABOUT A KEY MOMENT IN PUERTORICAN HISTORY, RICARDO ROMO’S TEJANO REPORT ON A NEW FRANK ROMERO EXHIBIT AND WE INFORM THE BOOK REVIEW BY JOSÉ UMPIERRE WITH A BACKGROUND ON WHAT WAS GOING ON IN PUERTO RICO PRIOR TO THE US INVASION WITH A BIOGRAPHY OF THE “FATHER OF PUERTO RICO,” RAMÓN EMETERIO BETANCES.
This week Sal Baldenegro reminds us of the hypocrisy pf the Republican response to President Joe Biden’s pardoning of his son Hunter. Sal needs only go to the scriptures to remind us that “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.”
José Umpierre’s December issue of Burundanga Boricua marks TEN YEARS that he has been blogging on Latinopia!!! We are proud of his many contributions and wish him another ten years of sharing his astute political and cultural observations of life in Puerto Rico. Dale gas, Gugo! In this week’s blog he reviews an new important book about a crucial moment in Puertorican history. El Jefe: Populism and Corruption in Puerto Rico in 1989, covers the administration of Puerto Rico under Luis Munoz Rivera. This was during the period when Puerto Rico was taken over by the United States. Indeed, this may well have been the most crucial period in Puerto Rico’s history since it set into motion the events leading to the current political status of Puerto Rico as a colony of the United States which today has been renamed a Commonwealth. Check out José Umpierre’s Spanish language review.
And this week, Ricardo Romo’s Tejano Report reviews a new exhibit of the works of acclaimed artist and co-founder of the Los Four artist group of the 1970s, Frank Romero. Once again, Ricardo gives us historical insight and some amazing art work to appreciate the latest exhibit by this unique and legendary master of Chicano art.
And last but not least, we post a biography of the person widely considered to be the “father of Puerto Rico” for his efforts to establish a free and independent nation, Ramón Emeterio Betances. When you read this biography Umpierre’s review has added depth.
Enjoy your week on Latinopia!
