THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: RICARDO ROMO ON THE VIRGEN DE GUADALUPE, LATINOPIA ART ON THE VIRGEN DE GUADALUPE AND COCINA HERNÁNDEZ ON LA TAMALADA.
As Christmas approaches we showcase two looks at the venerable Virgen de Guadalupe revered throughout Latin America and the world. In Ricardo Romo’s Tejano Report, Dr. Romo takes a look at the iconic origins of the Virgen de Guadalupe through her imagery over time. Complimenting Dr. Romo’s blog, is a clip from Jesús Treviño’s documentary Visions of Aztlan which features the updated rendering of the Virgen de Guadalupe by contemporary Chicana artists Yolanda Lopez and Ester Hernandez. This new imagery of the Virgen strives to update her from past passive imagery to a more active and contemporary image while still retaining the Virgen’s religious significance.
And Christmas time in Latino households would not be right without the presence of tamales! In Diana Hernandez Velarde’s video we follow the entire complex process of making tamales or as it is more commonly known, la tamalada.
Enjoy your holidays and Merry Christmas!
