THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: FELIZ NAVIDAD! CHICANO SCHOLARS WEIGH IN AT THE REUNION DE COLEGAS, RUDY ACUÑA ON THE FOUNDING OF CHICANO STUDIES, RICARDO ROMO ON CRUZ ORTIZ, THE NACCS PREAMBLE, CIHUATL SONG SINGS TEZCATLIPOCA AND SERGIO HERNÁNDEZ ON AN ARNIE AND PORFI CHRISTMAS.
Well Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all. We got a lot this week. We begin with a recent meeting of Chicana and Chicano scholars in Berkeley on the weekend of December 9-12th. As many of the original founders of Chicano Studies grow older and begin to retire, this group of scholars thought it wise to reunite and review the accomplishments and progress made in Chicano Studies over the past fifty years and assess issues that remain. We post the first of several videos on this important conference of scholars. Watch for more videos in the weeks to come.
Complimenting this video is a video interview with Dr. Rudy Acuna, one of the founders of Chicano Studies, as he explains the history of the founding of the Chicano Studies department at the University of California at Northridge. And, for background, we also post a Latinopia Document: the Preamble to the National Association of Chicana and Chicano Studies.
Dr. Ricardo Romo weighs in with his Tejano Report. This week he looks at the phenomenal work by artist Cruz Ortiz in restoring San Antonio murals.
Also this week we reprise the music group Cihuatl Song as they perform the song Tezcatlipoca.
And last but not least, we post cartoonist Sergio Hernandez’s take on Christmas in the form of an Arnie and Porfi cartoon.
Enjoy your week on Latinopia
