THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: ARMANDO VÁSQUEZ RAMOS ON EL PLAN DE SANTA BÁRBARA, LATINOPIA DOCUMENT: EL PLAN DE SANTA BÁRBARA, LATINOPIA DOCUMENT: 2015 PUERTO RICO DEBT CRISIS, JUAN GONZÁLEZ ON PUERTO RICO DEBT CRISIS, JESÚS TREVIÑO ON DENVER YOUTH CONFERENCE.
Here’s what’s up Latinopians! This week marks the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Plan de Santa Bárbara, a historic and ambitious plan for the creation of Chicano Studies curriculum throughout the United States. The plan spurred the creation of Chicano Studies departments in campuses nationwide and has resulted in hundreds of thousands of Latinos obtaining higher education. Armando Vásquez Ramos, one of the original signers of the plan, speaks about how the Plan came about. Also this week we post a Latinopia Document which showcases the Plan de Santa Bárbara itself. We are also posting a video about the March 1969 Denver Youth Conference which inspired activists to meet a month later and write up the Plan de Santa Bárbara. We must remember that although these events took place fifty years ago, they have inspired and propelled Chicano Studies departments that continue to this day to educate and formulate careers for Latino youth. The past is the present!
Also this week, we post a Latinopia Document about the Puerto Rican debt crisis. I know you have all heard about the debt crisis but may be a little vague on the details. Here is a definitive explanation of the debt crisis for the layman co-written by Jesús Treviño and regular Latinopia blogger José Umpierre. We repost an interview Democracy Now journalist Juan Gonzalez who looks at the long term solution for the debt crisis.
Enjoy your week on Latinopia!
