THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: SAINT PATRICK’S DAY! SAL BALDENEGRO ON THE IRISH-CHICANO NEXUS, THE STORY OF THE SAN PATRICIOS, JALAPENO SODA BREAD RECIPE, RICARDO ROMO ON LATINA WOMEN CELEBRATED AT EL CENTRO CULTURAL AZTLAN, AND BURUNDANGA BORICUA ON EL PRETEXTO.
Hey, it’s Saint Patrick’s Day again! We celebrate as we do every year noting the presence of the Irish in our Latino world. We begin with a reposting of an blog by Salomon Baldenegro on the Irish- Chicano Nexus. This is a fascinating look at the history of how the two cultures have merged over time. Also we repost a short film clip from Mark Day’s longer documentary on the San Patricios. And, of course, as we do every year we are posting a recipe for that scrumptious Irish soda bread but now infused with jalapenos, once again showing the affinity between the two cultures. Hey, take a stab and make your own soda bread this year!
Also this week, Ricardo Romo returns with his Tejano Report. This week he calls our attention to a new exhibit at the Centro Cultural Aztlan in San Antonio showcasing Mujeres de Fuerza–Women of Strength. This exhibit features the work of a spectrum of women artists including Adriana Garcia, Anita Valencia, Ann Wallace, Ashley Perez, Edma Lugo Martínez Liliana Wilson and Manola and Maria Ramirez.
And our Puerto RicaN blogger returns with his Burundanga Boricua. This week he looks at an unusual culinary experience that begins with harvesting of crops and then these crops become the food for your lavish dinner. This is quite an unusual and intriguing food experience. Check it out!
Enjoy your week on Latinopia
