THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: TWO LATINOPIA HEROES: DR. GILBERTO CÁRDENAS AND BENJAMIN SÁENZ, SALOMON BALDENEGRO ON FOUR WOMEN WHO WERE FEMINISTS BEFORE THEIR TIMES AND RICARDO ROMO ON NEW EXHIBIT AT THE BRISCOE WESTERN ART MUSEUM.
This week we learn of the sad news of the passing of two giants of our Latino community in America. Both hail from Texas. Scholar, educator and art enthusiast Dr. Gilberto Cardenas died at his home in Austin, Texas on July 26, 2026 and acclaimed poet and novelist Benjamin Saenz passed on July 28, 2026 in his home town of El Paso, Texas. Both men spent their lives making our communities and the lives of Latinos in America richer and stronger, each in their own unique way. Be sure to check out the Latinopia Hero obituary of each them this week. Worth the read and the reminder of all the good that two human being can accomplish in a lifetime.
Also this week, Salomon Baldenegro returns with his Political Salsa y Más blog which, coincidentally, also highlights the accomplishment of several people over a lifetime. But in this case, Salomon is referring to four courageous an tenacious women who have struggled for the benefit of our community for many years: Cecilia Rasmussen Baldanegro, Julia Corral Soto, Anna Baffert Laos and Juanita Loreña. Check out all the things these women did for our communities.
And Dr. Ricardo Romo returns with his art blog. This week he looks at a new exhibit of Tejano Art at the Briscoe Museum of Western Art in San Antonio, Texas.
