THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: SEVERO PÉREZ ON THE MAKING OF and the earth did not swallow him, RICARDO ROMO ON LATINO ART ENHANCES PUBLIC SPACES AND JOHN J. VALADEZ ON THE ROLE OF THE DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKER.
This week Latinopia looks at the career trajectory of acclaimed documentary and narrative filmmaker and director Severo Pérez who has written a memoir titled Filmmaker’s Journey. Besides producing and directing a long list of documentaries beginning in the 1960s, Severo was producer of the PBS American Playhouse drama Seguin (1982) and wrote and directed the feature film and the earth did not swallow him based on the novel by Tomas Rivera (1994). Severo talks about how he came to secure the rights to develop and direct the film version of and the earth did not swallow him.
Accompanying this video is an interview with documentary filmmaker John J. Valadez who speaks about the role of the documentary filmmaker which can also be extended to the role of the narrative filmmaker as well. Valadez’s commentary gives us insight into the long trajectory of work accomplished by Severo Pérez over a lifetime of filming.
Ricardo Romo returns with his Tejano Report. This week he looks at how art enhances San Antonio’s public spaces.
