THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: LATINOPIA HERO DR. MARIO BARRERA, FRANK ROMERO ON LOS FOUR EXHIBIT AT LACMA, BURUNDANGA BORICUA DEL ZOCOTROCO (IN SPANISH AND ENGLISH) AND RICARDO ROMO’S TEJANO REPORT ON RICKY ARMENDARIZ IN NEW YORK CITY.
This week we mourn the loss of venerated scholar and teacher Dr. Mario Barrera. A long time activist scholar at the University of California at Berkeley, Barrera pioneered the notion of the barrio as an internal colony of the United States in his early paper co-authored with Dr. Carlos Muñoz. We post here a remembrance by Laura E. Perez and the staff at Berkeley’s Latinx Research Center and declare him a true Latinopia Hero!
Also this week, we feature a new interview with celebrated artist, and pioneer of the Chicano art movement, Frank Romero. In this exclusive interview, Frank talks about the landmark exhibit of Los Four at the Los Angeles Museum of Art n 1974. This was the first time Chicanos were welcomed to exhibit at this prestigious museum.
El Zocotroco returns with a new blog, looking squarely at what he calls the Deranged Trump Syndrome. This is a good one, not to be missed. And we offer it in Spanish and in English!
Lastly, Ricardo Romo is just back from New York City where he reported on a new exhibit at the Healy-Ruiz gallery in Manhattan showcasing the work of El Paso native Richard “Ricky” Armendariz.
Enjoy your week on Latinopia!
