THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: SERGIO HERNÁNDEZ PRESENTE: ARTURO “TUDY FLORES REMEMBERS SERG, SERGIO HERNÁNDEZ IN HIS OWN WORDS, ISABEL ROJAS-WILLIAMS, SYLVIA ZAMORA SUAREZ AND MICHAEL SEDANO ON SERGIO HERNÁNDEZ, “TUDY” FLORES ON ARNIE AND PORFI.
This is a sad week for all of us at Latinopia and in the larger Chicano/Latino community. Our dear friend and collaborator Sergio Hernández has passed away. He leaves behind an impressive body of work including art pieces, murals and his iconic cartooning. Sergio began his artistic career in the late 1960s as a member of the Con Safos literary collective. He invented the iconic Arnie and Porfi cartoon strip for the magazine and later revived and expanded the strip to post on Latinopia. Sergio was a champion for human rights and a sharp political critic lampooning politicians and anyone else who deserved criticism. Sergio had an infectious smile and a sharp sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by so many of us in the larger Chicano/Latino community.
This week we hear from Arturo “Tudy” Flores, co-founder of the Con Safos literary collective, as he recalls his first meeting with Sergio and how he recruited Sergio into the group. Tudy also comments on the importance of Sergio’s Arnie and Porfi cartoon strip and of his other cartooning art. We also reprise an earlier interview with Sergio himself. In this interview we hear Sergio i his own words, speaking about his creative efforts, Arnie and Profi, and his philosophy of art.
Also proclaiming that Sergio is Presente, Art historian Isabel Rojas-Williams, author Michael Sedano and good friend to Sergio and Diane, Sylvia Zamora Suarez recall their memories of Sergio’s expansive with, humor and compassion.
This week’s entire Latinopia is devoted to Sergio: Not gone, always in our hearts. Sergio Hernandez PRESENTE!
With great sadness,
Tia Tenopia
