THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: ANGELA VALENZUELA ON LAST TRAIN TO FORTUNE, FRANK ROMERO ON WHAT IS BEAUTY AND WHAT MAKES ART VALUABLE? REMEMBERING ANTONIO RIOS BUSTAMANTE AND RICARDO ROMO ON NEW ART BY VICENTE VALDEZ.
This week we hear from blogger Angela Valenzuela with a combined review and opinion piece on a new film set in the old West with decidedly contemporary relevance. Its all about books and ideas and how they have been endangered in the past and are now doubly so in the present. Check our her piece on the new film Last Train to Fortune.
Also this week, we visit with legendary artist Frank Romero as he weighs in on two questions that have perplexed artists and audience alike over the ages. What is beauty? And what makes a piece of art valuable? The two perennial questions are addressed by a preeminent artist whose works span seven decades. Check out these fascinating Latinopia original videos produced by the husband and wife team of Rigo and Rosie Saenz. Not to be missed.
This week, friends, colleagues and family of the late Chicano historian Dr. Antonio Rios Bustamante will celebrate his life at the Plaza de Cultura y Artes in downtown Los Angeles. In remembrance of Antonio and his lifelong commitment to preserving Chicano and Mexican history, we repost a remembrance by his stepson.
And last but not least, Ricardo Romo reports on a new exhibit of art by San Antonio artist Vincent Valdez. As Dr. Romo points out, this exhibit is unique in that it banners, literally and figuratively, the faces of some of the thousands of “disappeared” victims in Mexico and South America. The new exhibit is “Siete Dias/Seven Days,” an installation at the Artpace in San Antonio, Texas.
Enjoy your week on Latinopia!
