THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: JOSÉ UMPIERRE ON THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE PUERTORICAN CONSTITUTION, CARLOS CALLEJO ON HIS WALK-OUT MURAL, CELEBRATING A LIFETIME OF MAGU: AZTLAN TO MAGULANDIA, THE WORLD OF MAGULANDIA, NAICHE ON MAGU AND WAYNE HEALY’S LETTER TO MAGU.
Watsup Latinopians! This week is about anniversaries. We begin with the anniversary of Puerto Rico’s Constitution (July 23rd) as interpreted by our faithful blogger José Umpierre. Check out his ironic take on what the Constitution does and doesn’t mean for Puertoricans. We also attach the Constitution itself! This week , we are also remind of the 50th anniversary ( March 1-8) of the Chicano student high school walk-outs with a new mural painted by muralist Carlos Callejo who himself participated in the walkouts. And the vato is still doing his art today! And this week we also celebrate the life of celabrated Chicano icon and artist Gilbert “Magu” Lujan ( July 24th) with a reprise of several videos on this legendary artist. We begin with Magu in his own words with a profile video made when he was still with us. His son, Naiche Lujan, weighs in with the videos From Aztlan to Magulandia and The World of Magulandia and his own thoughts on his father. And we also reprise artist Wayne healy with his letter to Magu written shortly after Magu’s passing in 2011.
While the passing of our dead friends is always sad, we celebrate the wonderful life they led and the joy they shared with us.
