THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: SAL BALDENEGRO ON THE EL PASO MURDERS AND BLOOD ON TRUMP’S HANDS, ALVARO HUERTA’S NEW BOOK, “DEFENDING LATINA/O IMMIGRANT COMMUNITIES,” EL ZOCOTROCO ON HOW THE EL PASO KILLINGS ARE RELATED TO PUERTO RICO’S STRUGGLE AND ANGELA ROA ON “WE FACE THE STORM.”
This week the massacre of twenty-two innocent people in El Paso Texas by a lone gunman obsessed with anti-Latino hatred still resonates on Latinopia. Sal Baldenegro calls out Donald Trump as his hateful rhetoric attests to blood on his hands for the El Paso deaths. Dr. Alvaro Huerta addresses the issue of hateful tropes and myths against Latinos and offers a humanistic counterpoint. Jose M. Umpierre, bloggging from San Juan, Puerto Rico, links the racism evident in the El Paso killings to long standing racism against Boricuas both on the island and on the mainland. In the face of these historic and current attacks on Latinos, Chilean born singer and song writer Angela Roa responds by reminding us how we must “Face the Storm” in this music performance of her original song.
Another sad week on Latinopia as we reel from the attacks on Latinos in Gilroy and El Paso.
