We have an eclectic variety of videos this week. We begin with Mark Guerrero’s East Los Angeles Music Stories. this week Mark focuses his two hour interview podcast on Geree (Geraldine Gonzalez), the great R&B, Latin, and pop vocalist who has sung with some of the best bands to emerge from East Los Angeles, including the Village Callers, Chico, and El Chicano. Also this week we visit with acclaimed author Dagoberto Gilb who reflects on the notion of literary “voice” and how he searches out the voice of each character in his novels and short stories. Check out this fascinating and thoughtful take on “voice.”
Antonio Solis Gomez is a founding member of the Con Safos literary group of the 1970s. In his novel, In Search of the Brown Buffalo, he images a whimsical road trip by the real life members of Con Safos as the set out to discover the whereabouts of a disappeared group member, attorney Oscar Zeta Acosta, known popularly as the Brown Buffalo. The real life Oscar Acosta disappeared in Mexico in the 1970s under mysterious circumstances and has been pronounced dead.
And lastly, we begin where we started with music from the East Los Angeles sound of the 1960s. We visit with music producer Hector Gonzalez as he shares with us the true life story behind the group Cannibal and the Headhunters and their hit song, “Land of a Thousand Dances.”
