THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: CÉSAR MARTÍNEZ AND THE MORATORIUM ANNIVERSARY. RICARDO ROMO ON EL OTRO CAMINO, LATINOPIA VIDEO ON EL OTRO CAMINO AND CÉSAR MARTÍNEZ IN HIS OWN WORDS AND THE CHICANO MORATORIUM, AUGUST 29, 1970.
This week we are happy to report on a new exhibit of art by acclaimed master artist César Martínez. The new show, El Otro Camino: An Intimate Portrait of César Martínez, highlights over sixty years of César’s trajectory including his serape series, his Pachucos series, his South Texas series and his Chicano Identity series. We begin with a review of the show and details of César’s life by Ricardo Romo.
Then we have two Latinopia videos. In one Diana Molina, curator of the El Otro Camino El Paso show, describes four of the epochs of César’s work. In the second video, we hear from the master himself as he reveals the discovery that, in fact, the pachucos his has painted over a lifetime are indeed himself, César Martínez In His Own Words.
Lastly, this week marks the 56th Anniversary of the Chicano Moratorium. We post a video showing the original Moratorium and the police riot that erupted when Los Angles Police and Los Angeles County Sheriffs attacked a peaceful crowd in Laguna Park in East Los Angeles. As every year, Chicano activists will honor the death of distinguished newsman Ruben Salazar who was killed on August 29th, 1970 in the aftermath of the police rioting.
