THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA 9.04.26

September 4, 2026 by wpengine

THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: HERMAN SILLAS ON “THE MEANING OF LABOR DAY,”  SAL BALDENEGRO ON “WOMEN AND LABOR,” TEJANO REPORT ON MY FOTOSEPTIEMBRE STORY AND PROFE QUEZADA “9/11 LEST WE FORGET.”

As Labor Day arrives, we have two blogs pertinent to this holiday. The first is by the late Herman Sillas (Feb. 11, 1934-Nov.22, 2023), an luminary attorney known for being one of the co-creators of The Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Foundation (MALDEF) as well as the Mexican American Bar Association. As president of the Western Region of the Civil Rights Commission, he conducted groundbreaking investigations into voting rights violations, farm workers’ rights and migrant abuse. In this blog, which Herman originally posted on Latinopia in 2019, he reminds us of “The Meaning of Labor Day,” which we at Latinopia feel still has much relevance today.

And also on labor, Salomon Baldenegro weighs in on Women and Labor in this reposted blog from 2023 Sal highlights several Arizona woomen who have made a difference beacuse of their labor activism.

Also this week, Ricardo Romo returns with his Tejano Report. This week he showcases a photo exhibit of photography by thirteen Latino photographers at San Antonio’s Aztlan Cultural Center. In “My fotoseptiembre Story.” Ricardo explains his curating of the exhibit which includes all but one Texas photographer. Ricardo se avienta with curating this cool exhibit of photography.

EL Profe Quezada returns with a touching remembrance of one of the casualties of the 9/11 attack on the Twin Towers. One of the women killed during the attack was from Texas and a friend of Don Gilberto. Check it out.

Enjoy your week on Latinopia!

BURUNDANGA BORICUA DEL ZOCOTROCO 10.01.26

October 1, 2026 By wpengine

Some Tejano historians believe San Antonio may have initiated some of the earliest celebrations of the end of Spanish colonial rule in the New World. Today, Latinos across the United States celebrate Mexican Independence Day on September 15th. Mexican independence began two hundred and sixteen years ago when Padre Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla gathered the […]
