THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: SALOMON BALDENEGRO ON REPUBLICAN HYPOCRISY, LATINOPIA HERO YOLANDA LOPEZ, JUAN GARZA REMEMBERS YOLANDA LOPEZ, YOLANDA LOPEZ ON HER THREE VIRGINS OF GUADALUPE AND YOLANDA LOPEZ ON HER “PILGRIM.”
Hola mi gente! This week we honor the memory of pioneering artist, feminist, photographer, filmmaker, educator and social activist Yolanda Lopez. We begin with a Latinopia Hero post recognizing Yolanda’s creative life, then a special personal remembrance by her long time friend filmmaker Juan Garza. Yolanda will perhaps be best rememebered for her series of paintings in which she depicted the Virgin de Guadalupe in a modern context. In our video interview with Yolanda she speaks about why she chose to portray the Virgin as herself jogging, as a seamstress and as a grandmother. Yolanda also painted what became an iconic graphic, an Aztec warrior pointing his finger at you with the capation, “Who’s the Illegal ALien, Pilgrim.” Yolanda has left a lasting legacy and a strong role model for future generations of men and women to emulate.
