THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: RICARDO ROMO’S TEJANO REPORT ON VANGUARD PRINTS AT THE METROPOLITAN, EVENT PROFILE ON MEXICAN INDEPENDENCE DAY, MOMENT IN TIME: THE 16TH OF SEPTEMBER PARADE AND A CLIP FROM PAUL ESPINOSA’S FILM SINGING OUR WAY TO FREEDOM.
This has been Mexican Independence Day week, with the usual panoply of parades and celebrations. For those of you who have forgotten or need to be reminded, we are posting a brief Latinopia Profile of the importance and significance of the 16 of September or as it is more commonly known in Mexico and the Southwest, El Grito.
Also this week, Ricardo Romo returns with his Tejano Report. This week he looks at a recent exhibition of Mexican prints at the Metropolitan Art Museum. It turns out, our peripatetic art connoisseur visited the Met in person back in the day. His report in the present is based on a new virtual tour of the Met’s Mexican art holdings. Check it out!
Also this week, we post a Moment in Time photo of what Mexican Independence Day looked like in 1961 with a surprising guest on the parade float.
And lastly, we offer a clip from Paul Espinoza’s new documentary on the life and music of Ramon “Chunky” Sanchez, Singing Our Way to Freedom which airs this week on PBS. Check out your local PBS station for broadcast date and times. To find out more about Paul Espinosa and his films visit his website: https://espinosaproductions.com/
