THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: PUERTO RICO HURRICANE RELIEF, JUAN GONZÁLEZ ON PUERTO RICO’S DEBT CRISIS AND ELSA ALMARAZ ON THE CARLOS ALMARAZ EXHIBIT AT THE LOS ANGELES COUNTY MUSEUM OF ART.
Hola mis Latinopians. We are terribly saddened by hurricane María and the devastation it has wrought over the island of Puerto Rico. As if the constant attacks on the economy of Puerto Rico imposed by the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management and Economic Stability Act (PROMESA) were not enough, now a natural disaster has struck the island and its people. Latinopia is posting a place to donate to hurricane relief. We urge you to help out! Also this week, Juan González, journalist and co-host of the news program Democracy Now, offers his recommendations what it will take to get Puerto Rico out of its quagmire. Check out: Puerto Rico Crisis- Two.
This week Latinopia begins a four-part video series on the work of the late Chicano artist Carlos Almaraz (1941-1946). In this first video we visit with Carlos’ widow, Elsa Almaraz, as she guides us through the new retrospective exhibit of his works at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and, in particular, his Echo Park paintings. In the next few weeks, we’ll hear from Elsa about her collaborations with Carlos about Carlos’ imagery and symbolism and his car crash series.
Remember, don’t forget our Boricua brothers and sisters!
