THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: XOCHITL-JULISA BERMEJO’S NEW COLLECTION OF POEMS, INCANTATION: LOVE POEMS FOR BATTLE SITES, AND BURUNDANGA BORICUA ON THE STATE OF POLITICS IN PUERTO RICO TODAY, RICARDO ROMO’S TEJANO REVIEW ON A NEW ART EXHIBIT IN QUERETARO, MEXICO THAT TRANSCENDS BORDERS, AND XOCHITL-JULISA READS FROM INCANTATION.
Poetry, art and politics this week on Latinopia.! We begin with a new book of poem by Chicana poet Xochitl-Julisa Bermejo: Incantation: Love Poems for Battle Sites. The collection was inspired by her residency at the Gettysburg National Military War park. The poems in this collection are varied, many of them written while at Gettysburg, but all are rooted in place and time. We also post a video of Xochitl reading from the collection the poems Battlefields and Birthday Candle for Breonna Taylor.
Ricardo Romo just got back from Queretaro, Mexico, where he filed this visit to a new exhibit that brought Chicano artists to Mexico. Al Otro Lado del Espejo [The Other Side of the Mirror], opened at the Museo de Arte de Querétaro, Mexico on September 20, 2024.The first half of an exchange that will later bring Mexican artists to Texas. As usual Ricardo’s report is insightful and caring. Check it out!
And José Umpierre returns with his Burundanga Boricua del Zocotroco blog. This week he looks at changes in the political make-up of the Puerto Rican political parties with the advent of two new parties Victoria Ciudadana and Dignidad. It seems the two new parties are gaining voters, while the pro-statehood party seems to be faltering. Things are beginning to be shaken up in Puerto Rico.
Check it all out and enjoy your week on Latinopia!
