Carlos Almaraz: A Life Recalled is a chronological survey of the artist Carlos Almaraz that draws from perspectives of those who cared for and knew him best. The show traces the trajectory of Carlos’s life: earliest years in Mexico; childhood in East LA; travails in New York; an awakening to the Chicano Movement and participation in Los Four collective; domestic bliss as a husband and father; recognition as a rising Los Angeles studio art star; and victim of AIDS. Carlos Almaraz: A Life Recalled is organized by Karen Rapp with Dan Guerrero and Elsa Flores Almaraz.

Bilingual Foundation of the Arts will produce the play SALON MEXICO in all its splendor and sordidness. Music, intense passions and a mystery that must be solved make up the story in which the Danzon is the principal player. The audience will witness the frenetic night in which the Danzon contest unleashes a whirlwind of passion. Paco and Mercedes, the best Danzon dancers in the club, decide for different reasons to enter the contest, without imagining that the quest for the prize would take them to a tragic outcome.

The Amigos de Siquieros group and Getty Museum are  sponsoring three events related to the celebration of the unveiling of the “América Tropical” mural on October 9th. In this event on the 4th, filmmaker Jesús Treviño will screen his classic documentary on the mural, “América Tropical” and Chicano muralists Judy Baca, Barbara Carrasco and Wayne Healy will read letters they have composed to Siquieros commenting on his inlfuence on their work and Chicano art.

On the 80th anniversary of the original unveiling of the mural “América Tropical”
painted by Mexican muralist David Alfaro Siquieros and later whitrewashed because of its controversial content. Aftera forty-year struggle to have the mural preserved it is finally going to be visible to the public in a viewing platform and interpretive center financed by the Getty Museum and the City of Los Angeles.

Visitors to both LA Plaza and its website have the opportunity to experience Voces Vivas, an original short-film series featuring interviews with a broad spectrum of Mexican Americans. These films expand on the LA Plaza experience, personalizing Mexican American history through the individual stories of the interview subjects and bringing to light a rich and sometimes controversial history. This series contains 50 films each running 4-5 minutes in length. Approximately half of the films are playing continuously at various kiosks throughout the first floor of the exhibit, LA Starts Here.

La Casa de Bernarda Alba is the third in a trilogy of rural tragedies by Federico García Lorca, widely regarded as Spain’s most distinguished twentieth-century writer.  Written in 1936, just before the Spanish Civil War, it was also Lorca’s final play.  He was assassinated in the same year when the war began, and never lived to see it staged; it was not produced until 1945 in Argentina, and not until 1964 in Spain. Federico García Lorca’s final masterwork set in a rural Andalusian household where the title character wields total control over her five daughters, all of whom secretly harbor a passion for the handsomest man in the village.

Instituto Cervantes, Pimentel Music, and the NHCC celebrate Día de la Hispanidad, a Spanish national holiday, with Pedro Navarro, an exceptional young guitarist from Andalusia, Spain, who has captured the world with his music, fusing flamenco, jazz, and classical styles to break the established rules of guitar canon.  He began playing guitar at the age of six, and earned a degree from the Castellón Professional Conservatory of Music when he was sixteen.  Today, at 27, he exhibits a talent that has inspired music critics to give him the nickname “Dedos con Duende” (“Magical Fingers”).  Navarro will be accompanied by guitarist Alejandro García Ruiz.
