THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: RICARDO ROMO ON JESSE TREVIÑO, MARK GUERRERO’S L.A. STORIES WITH THE LEGENDARY DELGADO BROTHERS, MIS PENSAMIENTOS WITH ALFREDO SANTOS AND DIANA LOPEZ’S QUINCENUNCA: NEVER SIXTEEN.
This week the Latino community nationwide laments the loss of a heroic and masterful artist, Jesse Treviño who passed away on February 13, 2023. As a young man Treviño had a promising career as an artist, working in New York, when he was suddenly drafted to the Viet Nam war. During his time in battle Treviño was seriously wounded, eventually forcing doctors to amputate his dominant right arm. In order to continue his passion for art, he had to teach himself how to paint using his left hand only. But this did not stop him from continuing a career in art becoming one of the preeminent Chicano artists of all time. Check out Ricardo Romo’s touching remembrance and homage to Jesse Treviño.
Also this week, Mark Guerrero’s Los Angeles Music Stories returns with Mark interviewing Bobby and Joey Delgado of the Delgado Brothers, a blues-based band who have five albums to their credit. Some of the stories covered: Two of their songs were recorded by legendary English blues man John Mayall, the Chambers Brothers sang on one of their recordings, Joey jammed with Dave Mason, and The Delgado Brothers won an international blues band competition in Memphis that led to tours in Europe and Brazil. Check out Mark’s latest interview.
Alfredo Santos of La Voz newspaper returns with his Mis Pensamientos column. This week he reports on the latest with San Antonio-based poet Nephtali De Leon and other San Antonio/Austin Tejano doings.
Lastly, we visit with Diana Lopez (now President of the prestigious Texas Institute of Letters) as she reads from her short story Quincenunca: Never Fifteen.
Enjoy your week on Latinopia!
