On this Memorial Day we pay tribute to the sacrifices made by Latino men and women during the many wars in which citizens of our community have stepped forward to defend their country and have paid the ultimate price. Since 2022, the date for Memorial Day, celebrated on the last Monday of May, has acquired a new significance as it coincide with May 24th 2022, the day of the Uvalde elementary school massacre in which an 18 years old gunman killed 19 children and two teachers at the Robb Elementary school. We take a moment to remember the lives lost on that fateful day and we reprint a thoughtful reflection by Dr. Emilio Zamora who looks at violence in our Latino community beyond Uvalde.
This week Ricardo Romo’s Tejano Report looks at recent funding awarded to Latinx artists by the Department of Education. It’s an exciting time for the Centro Cultural Aztlan which received $95,000 for its arts programs. And Ricardo shares some of this art with us. Check it out!
