THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: MOURNING THE LOSS OF ROBERT CINTLI RODRÍGUEZ, RICARDO ROMO’S TEJANO REPORT ON THE ART OF RICHARD ARREDONDO, CYNTHIA GUARDADO READS “JOHN’S MARKET ON EIGHTH AND MARIPOSA,” AND FILMMAKER PAUL ESPINOSA ON SINGING OUR WAY TO FREEDOM.
Lots this week. We begin with the sad news of the passing of another highly respected Chicano activist, Dr. Roberto Cintli Rodriguez. We post here a Latinopia Hero with the accompanying commentary by Enrique Murillo Jr. Throughout his lifetime Rodríguez was a powerful force speaking out on truth and justice and equality for La Raza. He will be sorely missed.
Dr. Ricardo Romo returns with his Tejano Report. This week he looks at the life and art trajectory of artist Richard Arredondo. From Texas to New York to Mexico City and back Arredondo has accomplished an enviable body of work, capturing historic San Antonio missions among many other landscapes.
In literature, poet Cynthia Guardado, who grew up in the United States of Salvadoran parents, reads her poem “John’s Market on Eighth and Marisposa.” This touching poem is a tribute to how her parents reconnected in Los Angeles having first known each other as children in El Salvador. A poem really worth listening to.
Lastly, we post a conversation with filmmaker Paul Espinosa about his feature length documentary Singing our way to Freedom which chronicles the life and music of Ramon “Chunky” Sanchez.
Enjoy your week on Latinopia!
