THIS WEEKON LATINOPIA 6.24.18

June 24, 2018 by Tia Tenopia

THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: LUIS TORRES ON TRUMP’S LATEST PENDEJADA – SEPARATING CHILDREN FORM THEIR PARENTS, JOSÉ UMPIERRE ON PART TWO OF HIS LOOK AT THE 2016 INFORME SOBRE EL DESARROLLO HUMANO, TONY GARCIA ‘S SU TEATRO PERFORM “ENRIQUE’S JOURNEY” ABOUT THE HARROWING JOURNEY OF IMMIGRANTS FROM CENTRAL AMERICA TO THE US,  MARTHA GONZALEZ AND QUETZAL PERFORM “LA MIGRA,” LOS POCHOS PERFORM “PASO DEL NORTE.”

Hola Latinopians! By now you have seen the photos and heard the cries of anguish from children separated from their parents by the Trump administration. Blogger Luis R. Torres weighs in on the current fiasco and the little-discussed economic benefit to Trump allies. José Umpierre brings us the second of his three-part look at the 2016 Study of Human Development in Puerto Rico. This is a sobering look at the trickle down negative impact of policies that have been at works for years. Check it out!

Also this week, we are reminded  that the immigration issue has been around for way too long. The conjunto group Los Poches reminds us of this in their rendering of the the traditional border ballad, Paso del Norte (Crossing to the North).  Tony Garcia’s theater company Su Teatro perform the play “Enrique’s Journey,” the harrowing true account of  one immigrant’s journey from Guatemala to the United States. And the East Los Angeles music group Quetzal, with lead singer Martha Gonzalez,  perform their original song, “Migra,” about the plight of Mexican immigrants crossing into the United States to seek a better life.

Enjoy these week’s videos and blogs!

July 9, 2026 By wpengine

Throughout the twentieth century, Mexican Americans and Chicanos/as fought tirelessly for civil rights, often in overlooked corners of the nation.  An initial review of the literature revealed the following list of potential historic sites where civil rights battles took place by Mexican Americans/ Chicanos/as.  This list is by no means conclusive.  Further research may still provide […]

BURUNDANGA BORICUA DEL ZOCOTROCO 07.09.26 (ENGLISH) TURNING EIGHTY: COSTS AND BENEFITS

July 9, 2026 By wpengine

I’m 80 years old. It is a round number, with the forcefulness that eight decades can have. I don’t claim prowess, although living beyond the average life expectancy is still an achievement. Adequacy, adaptability, perhaps? Who can explain the survival instinct and the mysteries of still being here? I know, from science and experience, that […]

LATINOPIA FOOD “JALAPEÑO SODA BREAD” RECIPE

By Tia Tenopia on March 14, 2011

Jalapeño Irish Soda Bread The sweetness of traditional Irish soda bread ingredients—raisins, buttermilk, some sugar—are richly complimented by jalapeño heat. Here’s a soda bread recipe from Ireland brought to the USA from Galway by Mary Patricia Reilly Murray and later transformed  with her blessing by her daughter, Bobbi Murray, who added jalapeño chile.  A real […]
