Bienvenidos otra vez a La Voz Newspaper.
In this issue of La Voz you find coverage of the recent Austin mayoral candidate forum organized by the Young Scholars for Justice that is sponsored by PODER. I attended this event two weeks ago and must say that the young people who helped put this together deserve, and in fact did receive, a big round of applause.
As I watched them conduct themselves I could tell a few of them were a little nervous. But at the same time, I thought to myself could I have done this when I was their age? The answer is no. Even though I was an activist at their age, I don’t think I could have engaged with older people the way this young people did. And while the mayor was a no-show, again they did a very good job.
Another story I want to call to your attention was put together by Alicia Perez-Hodge. She, along with several other Austinites attend the 95th Annual LULAC convention in Las Vegas, Nevada. In recent years, under the leadership of Domingo Garcia, LULAC seems to have become a more aggressive organization. Personally, I applaud this and look forward to covering their activities more frequently in La Voz.
Ahora, vamos con la politica. While it looks like things are becoming darker and darker for our county, I believe that come election day the registered voters are going to put
down their fishing poles and find their way to a voting booth. As a country we have seen dark times cuando se parece que no hay salida. But then the light begins to shine and people surprise you with their participation. This is not to saying we should just stand by and let the wind blow. Those of us who are more active than others still our work cut. It’s going to take money and time, but we can change the direction of this country, Orale!
