THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: THE ERNESTO GALARZA STORY EPISODE THREE, SPIDERS IN THE HOUSE AND EPISODE FOUR: A UNION AT LAST! BURUNDANGA BORICUA ON BAD BUNNY WITH LOVE (IN ENGLISH AND SPANISH) AND RICARDO ROMO ON HOW CHICANA/O ARTISTS ARE MAINTAINING FRIDA’S LEGACY.
This week Latinopia features two more original episodes on the life and legacy of renowned diplomat, labor organizer, author and social activist Dr. Ernesto Galarza. Episode Three, Spiders in the House, chronicles Galarza’s efforts to put an end to the infamous bracero program (1942-1964) and the writing of his landmark book Spiders in the House and Workers in the Fields. Episode Four, A Union At Last, shows how Galarza’s success at ending the bracero program allowed for the rise of the United Farm Workers Union under Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta. Check these cool historical videos.
Also this week, José M. Umpierre’s Burundanga Boricua del Zocotroco returns with an appraisal of the Bad Bunny Superbowl Half-Time Show and its remarkable response by Latinos and Americans alike in the United States and in Latin America and of course on Bad Bunny’s home turf of Puerto Rico. In the midst of so much bad news from the island, the Bad Bunny performance at the Super Bowl is a breath of fresh air!
And Ricardo Romo’s Tejano Report notes the impact made by Chicana and Chicano artists in cementing the legacy of premiere artist and legend Frida Kahlo. In this exhibit, currently at the Museum of Fine Arts at Houston, artists Rupert Garcia, Ester Hernandez, Carmen Lomas Garza, Marcos Raya, Juan R. Fuentes and Judy Baca and others contribute to Frida’s lasting legacy, Do check it out!
