THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: CELEBRATING INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY WITH DOLORES HUERTA, CIHUATL SINGS TEZCATLIPOCA, ROSE PORTILLO AS DOÑA PERFECTA, AND MARÍA JIMENEZ HENLEY ON WEST SIDE STORY AND RICARDO ROMO ON THE DE LA TORRE BROTHERS “UPWARD MOBILITY” EXHIBIT.
We celebrate this week International Women’s Day ( March 8, 2024) by showcasing three distinguished women and one musical group of women, all of them showing the diversity and brilliance of the women in our Latino community. We begin with an interview with pioneering labor activist Dolores Huerta speaking about the 1965 peregrinación, the pilgrimage march from Delano to Sacramento, California which was landmark in setting the farm worker’s union on their road to victory. We follow with a performance by the women’s musical group Cihuatl singing the ancient song based on the Aztec God Tezcatlipoca. We also highlight the artistry of Rose Portillo in her one-woman show, Doña Perfecta, which was written by another incredibly talented woman, the late Diane Rodríguez. We also showcase an interview with María Jimenez Henley who was in the original Broadway cast of West Side Story, the story of her first day of rehearsals after undergoing an appendectomy is at once harrowing and inspirational. Check out the accomplishments of these fabulous women!
Also this week, Ricardo Romo returns with his Tejano Report. This week he features the art work of the De la Torres brothers featured in their new exhibit “Upward Mobility.”
Enjoy your week on Latinopia!
