THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: FLORYCANTO! MARGARET ELYSIA GARCIA READS CHICANO HORROR STORY#1, RICARDO ROMO ON POST MODERN ART AT SAN ANTONIO’S CENTRO DE ARTES, EL PROFE QUEZADA WITH 113 DICHOS AND MARTHA GONZALEZ LEADS THE GROUP QUETZAL IN A PERFORMANCE OF “MIGRA”.
In the ancient Aztec world, the phrase florycanto, “flower and song,” represented the union of flowers in nature, and by extension the beauty found in art, and song and its related poetic forms of writing. So florycanto is another way of expressing the presence of the arts. This week we showcase three of the florycanto arts: the written word, visual art and song.
We begin with author and poet Margaret Elysia Garcia reading from her newly published collection of short stories, Chicana Noir and Other Stories. She reads Chicano Horror Story #1 in two videos, parts one and two. Check this out!
Also this week, Ricardo Romo’s Tejano Report explores a new exhibit at San Antonio’s Centro de Artes. The show focuses on post-modern art by a variety of Latino artists.
El Profe Quezada returns. This week he bring us a look at 113 new dichos (sayings), paying respect to the tradition of dichos that has existed in Mexican and Latino Culture for generations. The twist here is that all of these dichos are new ones that El Profe and his wife have archived themselves.
And our music selection features Martha Gonzalez singing with her group Quetzal their original composition “Migra.” Powerful music and a powerful performance. Don’t miss this one!
Because Latinopia is doing some housekeeping, next week’s postings will be a little late.
Enjoy your week!
