THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: JUDY BACA AND MURALS! RICARDO ROMO ON BACA’S NEW LACMA MURAL, JUDY BACA IN HER OWN WORDS ON THE TIJUNGA WASH MURAL, CHICANO ARTISTS SPEAK ABOUT MURALISM AND LORENA MANRIQUEZ ON SIQUEIROS’ IMPACT ON MURAL MOVEMENT.
This week we celebrate muralism and especially the work of pioneering muralist Judy Baca. We begin with Ricardo Romo’s visit to Judy Baca’s studio in Venice, California and a description of Judy’s landmark Tujunga Wash mural which depicts the history of people of color in California. This is an epic and awesome work which Ricardo explains in great detail and we now learn that a new addition is in the works which will be painted at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art later to be installed at the Tujunga Wash. We accompany Ricardo’s blog with a Latinopia interview with Judy Baca speaking about the Tujunga Mural.
Next, we hear from a spectrum of Chicano muralists speaking about how and why they were inspired to spend their lives creating mural art. This is a who’s who of muralists speaking about their inspiration and aspirations.
And lastly, we feature a Latinopia interview with filmmaker Lorena Manriquez creator of the documentary Walls of Passion as she explains the impact of David Alfaro Siqueiros’ mural America Tropical, painted in 1932, and how it sparked the contemporary mural movement in America.
A wonderful way to start the New Year.
Adelante!
