THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: PUERTO RICO! JOSÉ UMPIERRE’S LOOK AT THE CRISIS OF HOPE IN PUERTO RICO, JUAN GONZALEZ ON A WAY OUT OF PUERTO RICO’S ECONOMIC CRISIS, JUAN AGUSTÍN MÁRQUEZ ON PUERTO RICAN STATEHOOD VERSUS COMMONWEALTH, AND DIANA LÓPEZ “QUINCEANERA: NEVER FIFTEEN.”
This week we focus our attention on Puerto Rico. José Umpierre finishes his four-part essay on the the crisis of hope in Puerto Rico. With the recent Puerto Rican elections as a backdrop, Umpierre looks to the new Biden administration as a possible but problematic hope for Puerto Rico’s future. Complimenting Umpierre’s essay, we repost an interview with Juan Gonzalez, co-host of Democracy Now, on possible ways out of Puerto Rico’s economic crisis and hear the arguments for and against Puerto Rican statehood in a clip from Juan Agustín Márquez’s documentary “The Last Colony.”
Also this week Texas-based author Diana López reads from her short story, “Quinceanera: Never Fifteen.”
Enjoy your week on Latinopia.
