THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: SAL BALDENEGRO ON RIGHT WING LIES KILL PEOPLE, ELSA ALMARAZ ON CARLOS ALMARAZ AT LACMA, JOSÉ UMPIERRE ON PUERTO RICO’S CHRISTMAS CONSERVATORY CONCERT, AND DAN GUERRERO’S GAYTINO REMEMBERS CARLOS ALMARAZ
This week Sal Baldenegro’s Political Salsa y Más looks at how right wing lies about Latinos can and do actually kill people. Check out Sal’s convincing argument about how Latinos are being set up by right wing ideologues that have already result in Latino deaths.
This week marks the anniversary of the passing of acclaimed Chicano artist Carlos Almaraz. Carlos was a founding members of the Los Four art collective. In 1974, Los Four broke down the barriers to Chicanos being exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) with their Los Four exhibit. He later had his own retrospective at LACMA in 2017. Carlos passed on December 11, 1989; he would have been 80 years old this week. We repost a previous interview with the Carlos’s widow, Elsa Flores Almaraz, on the acclaimed retrospective at the Los Angles County Museum of Art and videos of Carlo’s signature Car Crash series. We also reprise a clip from Dan Guerrero’s Gaytino stage production in which he remembers his childhood friend.
Also this week, José Umpierre’s regular blog, Burundanga Boricua del Zocotroco, returns. This week he brings us a look at Puerto Rico’s celebrated Music Conservatory and Orquestra as they performs both classical and local pieces at their annual Christmas celebration.
Coming soon. Latinopia attended a reunion of Chicano scholars meeting to appraise the state of Chicano studies fifty years after the founding of the National Association to Chicano Studies. Latinopia will be posting videos of this conference in the coming weeks.
Enjoy your week on Latinopia!
