THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: FRANK SOTOMAYOR ON THE DAWNING OF DIVERSITY, SOTOMAYOR ON A GENERATION OF LEADERS, A MEETING OF SCHOLARS AT A MOMENT IN TIME AND RICARDO ROMO’S TEJANO REPORT ON LILIANA WILSON, AN IMMIGRANT LATINA ARTIST.
Hola Gente! Hey, today we’ve become accustomed to seeing Chicanos and other Latinos enrolled at major colleges and universities throughout the United States. But there was a time when Chicanos on campus were few and very far between. Frank Sotomayor, an acclaimed Los Angeles Times journalist with more than 35 years experience, has written a book that looks at how the first wave of 1960s Chicano students integrated Stanford University. The book is The Dawning of Diversity, How Chicanos Helped change Stanford University. We have Frank speaking about his book and we also have him speaking about a first generation of leaders who pressured Stanford into expanding the presence of Chicanos on campus. Check out these videos!
Also this week, we post a historic photo: A Meeting of Scholars. In 1982, a group of distinguished Chicano scholars, some of our first PH. D’s, met at a conference in Austin, Texas. The meeting was an ideal opportunity for sociologist Gilbert Cardenas to capture this rare occasion with so many outstading scholars in one room. Check it out!
In this week’s Tejano Report, Ricardo Romo profiles Chilean artist Liliana Wilson and her inspiring artwork.
And some of you have been asking about our regular Boricua blogger Jose M. Umpierre. Turns out he was under the weather with a serious operation but he’ll be back next week and will tell us all about his adventures!
Enjoy your week on Latinopia!
