THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: DAVID BOTELLO AND WAYNE HEALY ON THE MAGU IN POMONA MURAL, DEDICATION OF GILBERT “MAGU” LUJAN MURAL, RICARDO ROMO’S TEJANO REPORT ON SANTIAGO JIMENEZ, JR. AND DR. TOMÁS YBARRA-FRAUTO ON THE LATINA VOICE.
Hola mi gente! This week we celebrate the life of renowned artist Gilbert “Magu” Lujan. For the past two years muralist Wayne Healy, David Botello and Benjamin Botello of East Los Streetscapers have been working on a monumental mural celebrating the life and work of Magu Lujan. In the first of two videos, Wayne and David talk about the “Magulandia” mural and what the different images represent. The second mural captures the dedication of the mural on August 14, 2021 where Magu’s family, friends and fellow artists all gathered to pay him tribute.
Also this week, Ricardo Romo returns with his Tejano Report. This week he looks at the life and accomplishments of master accordionist and singer Santiago Jimenez Jr. Santiago was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Obama in 2016!
Also this week, sometimes we take for granted the many talented women writers of our community. Names like Sandra Cisneros, Pat Mora, Gloria Anzandúa come to mind. But there was a time , in the early 1970s, when women were still struggling t affirm their place in our literary canon. Literary critic and author Dr. Tomas Ybarra-Frausto reminds us of this in this Latinopia video on The Latina Voice.
Enjoy your week on Latinopia!
