THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: ERNESTO HOGAN ON CHICANO AS A SCIENCE FICTION STATE OF BEING, RICARDO ROMO ON PUERTO RICAN FOOD AT SAN ANTONIO’S LUNA ROSA RESTAURANT, HONORING LATINOPIA HERO DR. ARMANDO VÁSQUEZ-RAMOS AND LATINOPIA HERO DR. TATCHO MINDIOLA JR.
This week we are saddened by the loss of two giants of scholarship and activism of the Latino community. Dr. Armando Vásquez-Ramos was known to all as “El Profe” and spearheaded El Magonista magazine as well as major efforts on behalf DACA young people. He passed away on August 4, 2024 at the age of 57 years. We also honor the passing of University of Texas at Austin professor of Chicano studies Dr. Tatcho Mindiola Jr. who spent a lifetime championing Chicano and Latino education beginning with the creation of the first Mexican American Studies curriculum at UT Austin and the creation of the Chicano Studies Center there as well. Both of these giants of our community are remembered as Latinopia Heroes this week.
Also this week Ricardo Romo visits a new restaurant in San Antonio which banners Puerto Rican cuisine, the Luna Rosa Restaurant. Boricuas in town, watch out!
And Ernesto Hogan shares his views on how the movie Forbidden Planet inspired his early interest in science fiction and why he thinks “Chicano is a science fiction state of being.”
Enjoy your week on Latinopia!
