THIS WEEK ON LATINOPIA: JESÚS TREVIÑO ON FIFTY YEARS OF LA RAZA UNIDA, 1972 LA RAZA UNIDA CONVENTION, RICARDO ROMO ON THE ART OF RICARDO SANCHEZ AND MARK GUERRERO’S EAST L.A. MUSIC STORIES WITH LAWRENCE PEREZ OF THE PREMIERS AND 2009 ACTIVIST REUNION.
This week marks the 50th anniversary of the 1972 La Raza Unida convention in El Paso, Texas. This historic event brought together Chicano political leaders and activists to shape a political party made up of Mexican Americans and other Latinos. Though short lived, the repercussions of this movement continue to the present, as is witness by celebrations taking place in San Antonio, Texas September 15-17, 2022.
We feature a guest blog by filmmaker Jesús Salvador Treviño who served as the national media coordinator for the Raza Unida convention back in the day. Check out his essay reflecting on 50 years of struggle. Also this week we tag on a short video from the 2009 Activist Reunion to remind us that the Raza Unida convention was not the only event in which activists participated.
As an adjoining video we showcase a film Treviño made about the convention in 1972.
Also this week, Ricardo Romo’s Tejano Report showcases the work of artist Armando Sanchez.
And lastly, this week Mark Guerrero returns with his East L.A. Stories, this week his podcast interviews Lawrence Perez, lead singer of the ’60s group The Premiers.
